I have two fabulous grandchildren with nearly 10 years between them ( they are not siblings). The elder had an emotional difficulty recently and asked me to do something for her. Without hesitation I just did this: this does not make me special but sometime later following a casual remark by someone else ( who didn't know the details to be fair as they were confidential) it did make me reflect. How often when someone asks us to do something do we pause, consider and then maybe help, the level of which depends on so many factors but when a grandchild asks you just do it, no hesitation no discussion. This is who Grandmothers are. Who else can make us feel like this? Our children certainly sometimes but sometimes not because we are bound up in guiding them, helping them to think for themselves, find their own way, fight their own battles, a partner if we are very lucky and still have a partner that we feel that way for, but a grandchild always unconditionally: simples.
